Driving Directions

From Phoenix

  1. Take I-10 West towards Buckeye.
  2. After Buckeye, take the exit to State Route 85 South (toward Gila Bend/I-8 San Diego).
  3. Continue into Gila Bend and turn left just after McDonald's at the sign for Mexico/SR 85 South.
  4. Continue south on SR 85 to Ajo (approximately 39 miles).
  5. Continue on SR 85 through Ajo to Why, AZ (approximately 10 miles).
  6. Continue on SR 85 through Why to Lukeville, AZ (approximately 27 miles).
  7. To cross the border, drive forward to the crossing station and note the traffic light. If the light is green, you are free to proceed with caution. If the light is red, you will be waived into a parking space. Be polite and patient. The Mexican border police may ask you some questions and to see inside your car or trunk. The border police are usually looking for drugs and guns, so do not attempt to bring either into the country. If you are pulled over for inspection, you will likely be on your way in less than a few minutes.
  8. Once you cross the border, you will be in Sonoyta, Mexico. Make sure you pay careful attention to the speed limit signs in town, which will be shown in kilometers rather than miles per hour.
  9. After about 1.8 miles, you will arrive at a 3-way intersection with a stop sign (ALTO in Spanish). You will see a monument and signs for PTO Peñasco and Santa Ana to the left. Make a left at the stop sign and then bear right, following the signs to PTO Peñasco.
  10. Stay to the right (towards Puerto Peñasco/Caborca) at the Y. Do not follow the sign to San Luis or Santa Ana. There is a traffic light soon after you bear right. Continue straight through this traffic light to Mexico Highway 8.
  11. Once you are through town, continue on Highway 8 from Sonoyta to Puerto Peñasco (approximately 60 miles). Along the way you will see a sign saying EJ PTO Peñasco. Do NOT turn at this sign. Continue on Highway 8 until you see the sign for Sandy Beach Resorts.
  12. After approximately 60 miles, you will see the sand dunes of Puerto Peñasco on your right. Turn right at the second traffic signal (Calle 26 / Blvd. No. Reeleccion).
  13. Continue on this road past the railroad tracks (road becomes Blvd. Costero), through the roundabout, continuing around the bend to the right until you see the Las Palomas main entrance at the next roundabout.
  14. Turn left at the flags and main entrance and drive to the main gate. Ask the guard for directions to the RESALES office, or continue to the Rubi Lobby.

From Scottsdale / Mesa / Tempe

  1. Take Loop 202 or SR60 (Superstition Freeway) to Interstate 10 south.
  2. Exit to SR 347 (Exit 164) toward Maricopa.
  3. Continue on SR 347 through Maricopa until it dead ends at SR 84. Turn right onto SR 84 to Gila Bend/Yuma.
  4. After approximately 5 miles, bear right onto Interstate 8 West toward San Diego.
  5. Continue on Interstate 8 for approximately 34 miles.
  6. Exit for SR 85 (Exit 115) to Ajo/Mexico and turn left onto SR 85.
  7. Continue south on SR 85 to Ajo (approximately 39 miles).
  8. Continue on SR 85 through Ajo to Why, AZ (approximately 10 miles).
  9. Continue on SR 85 through Why to Lukeville, AZ (approximately 27 miles).
  10. To cross the border, drive forward to the crossing station and note the traffic light. If the light is green, you are free to proceed with caution. If the light is red, you will be waived into a parking space. Be polite and patient. The Mexican border police may ask you some questions and to see inside your car or trunk. The border police are usually looking for drugs and guns, so do not attempt to bring either into the country. If you are pulled over for inspection, you will likely be on your way in less than a few minutes.

  13. Stay to the right (towards Puerto Peñasco/Caborca) at the Y. Do not follow the sign to San Luis or Santa Ana. There is a traffic light soon after you bear right. Continue straight through this traffic light to Mexico Highway 8.
  14. Once you are through town, continue on Highway 8 from Sonoyta to Puerto Peñasco (approximately 60 miles). Along the way you will see a sign saying EJ PTO Peñasco. Do NOT turn at this sign. Continue on Highway 8 until you see the sign for Sandy Beach Resorts.
  15. After approximately 60 miles, you will see the sand dunes of Puerto Peñasco on your right. Turn right at the second traffic signal (Calle 26 / Blvd. No. Reeleccion).
  16. Continue on this road past the railroad tracks (road becomes Blvd. Costero), through the roundabout, continuing around the bend to the right until you see the Las Palomas main entrance at the next roundabout.
  17. Turn left at the flags and main entrance and drive to the main gate. Ask the guard for directions to the RESALES office, or continue to the Rubi Lobby.

From Tucson

  1. Take Interstate 10 to Interstate 19 South.
  2. After approximately 1 mile, exit onto State Route 86 (Ajo Highway).
  3. Remain on SR 86 West until you arrive at the intersection of State Route 85 in Why, AZ (a very small town).
  4. Turn left (south) on SR 85.
  5. Continue on SR 85 through Ajo to Why, AZ (approximately 10 miles).
  6. Continue on SR 85 through Why to Lukeville, AZ (approximately 27 miles).
